Jeff Goldblum Officially Reprising Role of Dr. Ian Malcolm in Jurassic World 2!

Life, uh, finds a way. It was just confirmed by Hollywood Reporter that Jeff Goldblum will make his return to the Jurassic Park franchise in 2018. Goldblum’s much beloved chaotician Dr. Ian Malcolm was first introduced in the original film, and later returned to star in the 1997 sequel  ‘The Lost World’. Now, nearly 20 years later, he’s back, and we couldn’t be more excited.

Eagle eyed super fans probably spotted the Malcolm easter eggs laced throughout Jurassic World, with his picture appearing on the fictional book ‘God Creates Dinosaurs’. Perhaps they were trying to tell us all along that he would be back! Now the big question is what story elements will spark his return, and what role will he play?

While one would think two brushes with death amongst dinosaurs would be enough to keep him far away, his personality is much like a moth to the flame. He wants to be there, to tell people they’re foolish, to try to convince them to take another path, and ultimately, to tell them “I told you so”. It seems fair to assume that as much as he wants to stay away on a baser level, he has an attraction to chaos that he cannot deny – and chaos certainly rules after the Jurassic World incident.

I personally could see his character returning to be the voice of logic, less enamored by the dinosaurs, viewing them in a more negative light. In a way, I imagine he’ll be a bit of an anti-hero, as we the audience find ourselves rooting for the dinosaurs to survive – he’ll probably be less sympathetic. Let’s face it, while we all love the dinosaurs, they pose a huge threat to natural ecosystem of the world, and if they ever were introduced outside of the islands the consequences would be dire.

Producer Frank Marshall had this to say about Jeff’s return to Slashfilm:

“I’m excited to have him back. The world has changed a lot since Ian Malcolm went to Jurassic Park and we need his point of view now more than ever. He told us about chaos theory, he was right.”

However he returns, I believe he’ll help keep the science part of science fiction going strong in the upcoming sequel – something I found lacking from the main protagonists in Jurassic World. Jeff Goldblum joins Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, B.D. Wong, Daniella Pineda, Justice Smith, Toby Jones, Rafe Spall, Geraldine Chaplin, Ted Levine and James Cromwell in Jurassic World 2 which releases June 22nd, 2018.

James Cromwell talks Jurassic World 2: ” football field sized set with real recreations of dinosaurs”

Jurassic World 2 actor James Cromwell was recently interviewed by Collider while promoting his upcoming film, ‘The Promise’. While they do not go into too much detail about the upcoming Jurassic Park sequel, Cromwell chattily shared some of his experiences working on the picture, and what it’s like jumping into such a big budget film.

“The prop people have made wonderful things. The set people have made wonderful things. There’s just so much money and so much power and so much prestige. It’s Jurassic Park. It’s unreal. And then, you do your work and, instead of doing it in a room, you’re doing it in a football field sized set with real recreations of dinosaurs. We had three full-sized dinosaur bone replicas that came from a museum in America, and five other heads.”

He mentions that despite the large budget, director JA Bayona still had to fight for certain creative freedoms while making the movie. Being a fan of Bayona’s prior work, I know he has a good eye and mind, so I do hope we won the arguments!

“Money is no object. You take your time and do whatever you need to do. The director, bless his heart, was trying to fight off all of the executives. I probably shouldn’t say that.”

Cromwell went on to talk about his experience working with Bayona, including a scene where he was surprised by the directors request for him to cry.

“He’s wonderful. I liked him a lot. He does some very strange things. At one point, my character is supposed to care about this thing, and I was doing my caring bit. He came over to me and said, “If you want to break down and cry, you can do that.” I thought, “Oh, really? Thanks! What am I crying about?” And Geraldine Chaplin, who has made three or four pictures with him, said, “Did he ask you to cry? He always asks you to cry!” He evidently has a little recipe book of things to do to heighten an actor.”

Just who is James Cromwell playing, and what scene calls for him to cry? While we’ll have to wait until June 2018 to see why the tears start flowing, we do have some theories on his characters role: the wealthy owner of the mansion from the first set picture. Perhaps his character is even married to Geraldine Chaplin’s – someone else that fans speculated may own the mansion.

As for his motives, perhaps he is a dinosaur enthusiast funding a rescue mission for the dinosaurs of Isla Nublar? His mansion sure is filled with dinos of all sorts, including realistic looking statues, and we know that some characters are trying to save the dinosaurs from the image Frank Marshall shared below:

Dr. Jack Horner sits down with us and talks Jurassic Park, Jurassic World 2, Chickenosaurus and more! Listen!

On Sunday April 2nd, the Jurassic Outpost team met with Dr. Jack Horner at the first official fan event we sponsored in collaboration with Universal Pictures. To say the least, we were thrilled that he joined us at the event – and there is no question, he stole the show! He sat down with Darice Murphy from Universal Pictures and answered numerous questions from fans before moving on to a more personal meet and greet with those attending (we believe roughly 100+)!


While video from the event is still coming from us soon, yesterday Dr. Horner was kind enough to join us for a more intensive chat and answer our biggest questions as we geek out over dinosaurs. Spoilers: yes he is working on Jurassic World 2, and says the script is great. He also dishes out his thoughts on the Jurassic Park Dilophosaurus, feathers, Velociraptor size, and much more – and it doesn’t stop there! Dr Horner also chats Terra Nova, his sweltering experience on the Jurassic World set, Chickenosaurus, and how he accidentally tortured a sum of money out of George Lucas!

I imagine some of you are sitting here asking “What on earth is Chickenosaurus?” Well, let me tell you, it’s nothing short of amazing. Dr. Horner is working with top minds in an attempt to reverse engineer a chicken, bringing out its dormant biological features such as a snout with teeth, hands with claws, and of course a tail. He hopes to have successfully engineered these dinosaurs within 3 years – I ask if we can expect a park to visit, but he took it a step further and suggested them as pets. Now you’re John Hammond, Dr. Horner.

Coming to the April 2nd fan event? Make a ‘Save the Dinosaurs’ sign in advance for a fun photo-op!

This weekend the first official Jurassic World fan event is happening at the Franklin Institute and we couldn’t be more excited! April 2nd, Philadelphia – be there! We’re hosting the event in collaboration with Universal Pictures and it’s going to be a blast (See Jurassic World on the big screen, meet Dr. Jack Horner, tour Jurassic World the Exhibition, and more – plus it only costs 14.95 to attend!) We’ve decided to add another fun, yet optional flavor to the event: let’s do a Jurassic World 2 photo-shoot! How, you ask? Well, via domain purchases we suspected Jurassic World 2 would have a ‘save the dinosaurs’ theme – which was confirmed by a set picture tweeted by Frank Marshall! So, we thought it would be fun to take an ‘in universe’ picture pretending to be protesters rallying for dinosaur rights! To be clear, this is just an idea we had at Jurassic Outpost and is not an official tie in to the film.

Interested? Grab a poster board, large piece a of paper, or anything else and get your arts and crafts on! Go for a homemade look – we want this to look like a real protest, so you do not need to be a professional artist. Keep in mind that the museum may not be able to facilitate the signs, so they may end up in the trash – we’ll try to keep that from happening, but we won’t know until everyone shows up!

New concept art from Jurassic World reveals a much scarier Indominus Rex

The Indominus Rex went through many revisions – and names – as it was developed for 2015’s Jurassic World. As many know, the Indominus Rex was initially called the Diabolus Rex, but before that was the Malusaurus.  Thanks to concept artist Seth Engstrom, we have a look at one of her drastically different early designs!

What I find immediately fascinating is her sail running down the back – my immediate thinking is she was part Spinosaurus rather than Tyrannosaurus at this point. The colors are also quite remincent of the JP3 Spinosaurus maquette – perhaps with a little JP3 Ceratosaurus for good measure. The nasal crest is quite curious as well, whether or not it was inspired by hybrid DNA from another creature, or simply an artistic choice is unknown. Either way, this design is incredibly cool and looks quite a bit more like a monstrous hybrid than a real dinosaur when compared to the final Indominus.

While this version is simply a different color scheme variation of the other posted above, it does seem to have a different, protruding chameleon like eye. Either way, the art is an incredibly cool glimpse into the design process that led to the final creature we know and love in the film. Further, here are two other early iterations that ditched the fin on the back, and crest on the nose:

As you can see, the design fluctuated quite a bit over time – who knows what other wild iterations may exist, like the sail back designs shared by Seth Engstrom! If only Universal had released an art book – perhaps one will be made for Jurassic World 2, and will include the development of Jurassic World – as long as it’s incredibly long, detailed and filled with great images I won’t complain!

Seth also shared an early look at a Velociraptor named “Red” – many fans have speculated that this was a Velociraptor due to many toys and merchandise featuring a red Velociraptor. It’s cool to have an early glimpse at her – I really love the natural colors, and how they pop – and the inspiration from the Jurassic Park 3 design is awesome to see!

Apparently feathered designs were attempted early on, but after much debated it was decided to go retro. I think that’s best for species that are already established in the franchise, but I would certainly love to see newcomers sporting plumage in the future!

Colin Trevorrow shares first beautiful set picture from Jurassic World 2!

Welcome to Jurassic World 2. Colin Trevorrow just took to twitter to share this beautiful set photo from the upcoming installment in the Jurassic Park saga. Captioned only with “Walking in giant footsteps. #Jw2”, we’re left to speculate about what the image shows.

The image, which I originally thought was concept art or a key frame, was confirmed to be an actual still from the film by Frank Marshall. It showcases a young girl (likely “Lucy“!), looking at a hall of dinosaurs in what appears to be a very ornate mansion. The current favorite theory is perhaps this is John Hammond’s mansion, though reports of a mansion set being built for filming suggest this may actually be on one of the islands. If so, it doesn’t seem nearly aged enough to have been left abandoned for 25+ years, so it’s unlikely to be John  Hammond’s (unless the film will utilize flashbacks?)

On back  left of the photo is a small therapod dinosaur, which may possibly be a Velociraptor (though it’s hard to tell) – middle left appears to be an Edmontosaurus, and front left appears to be a Juvenile Tyrannosaurus Rex/Nanotyrannus (see: Jane). Back right is a Protoceratops, followed by a Kosmoceratops, and finally closest to the frame is likely an Euoplocephalus or perhaps Edmontonia. The large skull center frame is a bit of a curiosity, but we currently speculate it’s a Agujaceratops.

This image is simply gorgeous – and it absolutely screams director J.A. Bayona’s and cinematographer Oscar Faura’s style. I can’t get over how beautiful the set, framing, composition, and lighting is. Whatever the image showcases, one thing is for sure: we’re in for a visual treat in Jurassic World 2.

Rumor: Jurassic World 2 titled ‘Jurassic World: Epoch’?

Jurassic World 2 began filming over a week ago, and while a few pictures have been shared from the shoot, nothing too substantial has hit. However, today we have a fairly big (albeit unverified) rumor: allegedly the Universal Pictures website temporarily unveiled the title of Jurassic World 2 according to Twitter user @matthewjn:

Now, by the time we caught wind of this, the website listing already changed back to  ‘Jurassic World Sequel’ – as we were unable to verify the veracity of this claim, we suggest everyone take this news with the appropriate grain of salt. With the internet it’s far too easy to spread fake rumors, and we always take leaks like this with a healthy dose of skepticism, no matter the source. That said, this isn’t the first time the word ‘EPOCH’ has been associated with Jurassic World 2.

Back in November, Ryan (who is part of our news and podcast team) caught a temporary update to JurassicWorld.com – in one of the news nodes was the word EPOCH with the silhouette of a Volcano behind it. He clicked the link, which brought him to a nonexistent page, and upon returning the node was gone. This led us to speculate about the plot of Jurassic World 2, meshing the volcano bit with recently purchased domains (AllCreaturesHaveRights.com, IslaNublarRescueMission.com, and DinosaurProtectionGroup.com).

Those domains purchased were recently corroborated by a set pictured shared by Frank Marshall:

Take note of the poster on the wall titled “#WeCanSaveThem” – seemingly showcasing the raising of funds for some unknown purpose, and then the homemade Tyrannosaur holding a sign saying “Save Our Saurs”. While we can’t be sure what the full purpose of this dinosaur protection activism and fundraising is for, it does seem to be something critical to the plot judging by the domains. Could it be to save the dinosaurs from an imminent volcanic eruption?

If so, perhaps the eruption is a significant enough event to earn the title EPOCH – defined as “The beginning of a distinctive period in the history of someone or something.” Personally, I’m not a huge fan of the title – as it stands it sounds incomplete, and doesn’t flow off of the tongue easily. However, it could make sense depending on the plot of the film (it’s worth noting it also may just be an internal placeholder name to avoid major leaks.)

The Jurassic Park franchise has been nothing if not inconsistent in titling its films, but I’m a fan of anything over simple numbering (as seen with Jurassic Park 3). Jurassic World 2 has begun filming – first pictures of staging area!

Welcome to Jurassic World 2.

The fifth installment of the Jurassic Park saga has begun filming today in Slough, England. We reported two days ago that the upcoming Jurassic World sequel would film on site at the Langley Business Centre today, and as expected activity in the area has kicked into gear. While we do not know what’s being filmed today, we do have pictures of the staging area and the “Picture Vehicle Department”.

As you can see, it’s using the ‘Ancient Futures’ working title, rather than outright calling it Jurassic World – but it’s quite obvious what film it is with that font! Interestingly, as the sign points out, this is the “Picture Vehicle Department”, which presumably is a warehouse filled with Jurassic World themed vehicles. This would possibly explain why someone said they saw a helicopter on site earlier:

We were told the production began working in the area about two months ago, seemingly building a soundstage in one of the warehouses (as lots of jungle and forest greenery was seen on location). This is almost assuredly in a different building than the vehicle department pictured, and is likely where they are filming today (though perhaps the buildings are attached). Whatever is happening there remains a mystery, but hopefully J.A. Bayona or someone else involved with the production will give us official details soon!
