All New Official Jurassic World Short-film ‘Battle at Big Rock’ Now Available to Watch!

It’s finally here – Jurassic World now has an expanded universe. ‘Battle at Big Rock’, and all new Jurassic World short film set one year after the events of Fallen Kingdom, just made its debut on FX. Set in the Californian wilderness, a family of four encounter more than they bargained for as dinosaurs turn their fun into a situation of survival.

‘Battle at Big Rock’ features the never before seen Nasutoceratops (and baby), and introduces the adult Allosaurus (with an animatronic from Legacy Effects), which was previously seen in Fallen Kingdom as a juvenile. ‘Big Rock’ was written by Emily Carmichael and directed by Colin Trevorrow, with Larry Fong as the cinematographer. The short follows an all new cast consisting of André Holland (Moonlight), Natalie Martinez (Under the Dome), Melody Hurd (Fatherhood) and Pierson Salvador. Music is by Jurassic newcomer Amie Doherty.

Watch the short film below!

Warning – detailed spoilers for Battle at Big Rock below:

Battle at Big Rock opens with an ominous newscast reporting on numerous dinosaur sightings in the Californian countryside, before opening on a family camping in a public campground. Shortly after being introduced to our characters, some Nasutoceratops wonder into the campsite inflicting fear and distaste, sparking remarks along the lines of “Oh no, it’s one of them” “What is itdoing all the way up here?”. We realize dinosaurs sightings are a thing people know about, are not happy about, but do not fully expect. We also learn there was a recent incident that turned ugly, though it apparently involved carnivores unlike the herbivores in the campsite, as the families daughter confidently states.

But then, not all is as it seems, and a hungry Allosaurus hunting the Nasutoceratops family reveals itself. Carnage ensues. At some point in the fight, a second Nasutoceratops charges in – the father, a buck – sexual dimorphism is apparent in the species, as not only is he larger, with longer horns, but his colors appear slightly different. While Jurassic World features male and female dinosaurs, this the first time since Jurassic Park 3 that sexual dimorphism has been made apparent on screen.

When the short film makes its end, the family shaken but alive, and eerie Jurassic music kicks in. The credits paint a serious picture – dinosaurs are part of our world, and home footage of various dinosaur encounters plays, such as a scenario where Compy’s are attacking a little girl. This is perhaps the clearest look at what Jurassic World 3 will be yet. We’re now living in a new era of wonder and thrills, where dinosaurs and humankind must learn to coexist…

Stay tuned for HD pictures from Battle at Big Rock!

Perhaps the most exciting parts of the reveals above is the look at the Amber Collection box art, which takes a more minimalistic and streamlined approach to packaging design, though is more complex in texture detail when compared to the Star Wars Black Series from Hasbro. One of the choices I like the most is rather than using the complex full film logo, it’s simply the round Rex logo with amber inspired styling, giving the overall presentation a much more refined look.

Velociraptor Charlie is the other big reveal, as she was not announced by Mattel at SDCC, and seems to be planned for release alongside Owen and Blue. While the core 3 3/4″ line didn’t handle the Raptor Squad very well, messing up both Delta’s and Charlie’s colors, the Amber Collection has absolutely nailed it. Her color scheme is complex, accurate, and striking looking.

It’s clear the Amber Collection is shaping up to be a collectors series worthy of Jurassic Park, and we cannot wait to go hands on when the first toys release later this year!

What are your thoughts on the new reveals, and what characters do you hope make it to the Amber Collection in the future? Sound off in the comments below, and stay tuned – we have many more Mattel reveals, including a look at new Primal Attack toys coming later this week!

Watch the First Episode of the Upcoming Lego Jurassic World TV Show Now!

LEGO Jurassic World Legend of Isla Nublar, a brand new mini series, will make its debut September 14th at 11:30am EST on Nickelodeon! The series consists of 13 22-minute-long episodes, and takes place in 2012 prior to events of Jurassic World. Featuring your favorite characters from the World films, and even some surprising appearances from Jurassic Park classic characters, the series is sure to be a hit with fans of all ages.

Ahead of its September 14th debut on TV, Nickelodeon has shared the first episode “Mission Critical” on their YouTube channel – watch it below!

The series itself picks up after LEGO Jurassic World The Secret Exhibit, which introduced Jurassic World employee Danny Nedermeyer, the nephew of Dennis Nedry, who’s goal is to sabotage the park. With the first episode of Legend of Isla Nublar, an esteemed-yet-feared theme park critic visits the island to pass his ultimate judgement — what could go wrong? Well, as you’ll see – lots of things.

The show may not be canon, but you can perhaps accept its broad-stroke plot points as part of the parks history if you consider the format of the show as an incredibly unreliable narrator. It is for younger audiences than shows like Star Wars Rebels – or the upcoming Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous after-all, and canonical accuracy isn’t the primary directive. Did a critic visit the park, and was there an employee who had less than the parks best interests at heart? Perhaps. Did Wu steal the credit of his partner scientists, Owen train the T. rex, and was there really a nephew of Nedry involved? Probably not.

But if you watch the show for good fun, and nothing else, then fun will be had. The show is cute, funny, and playful. Especially if you’re in its target under-10-age-range, and as such it’s sure to be hit with kids and families!

Sound off in the comments below, and let us know what you thought about the first episode. The series will continue airing every Saturday on Nickelodeon post its debut September 14th, so be sure to stay tuned for our continued coverage. Alongside the new series, brand new LEGO sets are now available tied to the series – check them out below!

Note: the Savage Strike ($9.99) assortment will continue, and feature Sauropelta, Postosuchus, and a new Velociraptor with its first wave.

While the above is just a tease of all the new toys to come, it certainly is revealing of the direction the new expansion is taking. The Tarbosaurus is the most exciting of the reveals, as it not only shows off a brand new toy, but gives a great idea of what the stunning new box art looks like! As we previously revealed, some of these toys are related to Camp Cretaceous – we’ve learned the Carnotaurus is one of those toys, and it’s one of they key species in the show (as such, it will be the key TV driver for the Spring Primal Attack ads).

We also are quite excited to see electronic toys at a smaller scale with the Sound Strike range, meaning we will likely see electronic Velociraptors and other species around that size. We’ve since learned that the Sound Strike assortment are larger dinosaurs, and the successor to Roarivores.

What part of the latest reveal are you most excited by, and what do you want to see with the new toy line? Sound off in the comments below, and as always – stay tuned for the latest news!

Watch Steven Spielberg Talk the Jurassic World Ride at Universal Studios Hollywood in a New Behind the Scenes Video!

Jurassic Park may be extinct at Universal Studios Hollywood, but its DNA lives on in Jurassic World. While Steven Spielberg’s film may not be the namesake of the new experiences, he was very much involved and supportive of the evolution of the park.

Watch the fantastic behind the scenes video below where numerous Jurassic World creatives weigh in on bringing the dinosaurs to life!

Recently, I visited the park for the grand opening celebration of the ride – I’ve struggled getting my “review” and videos online, in part due to my busy schedule, but also due to the fact that I’m not sure what I think of it all. When it’s good, it’s great, but overall the new Jurassic World experience feels lackluster and rushed, not living up to its source material, nor justifying it replacing a classic which has so much attention to detail put in.

But that’s not to say the new Jurassic World experience isn’t fun – it’s a blast, especially with the dinosaur meet and greets, which are pure magic. If you go with friends or family, you’re going to have a good time – but you will also likely expect a little more from it all around (especially when compared to stellar and robust experiences like the Wizarding World of Harry Potter).

I’m off message here – I need to save this all for my roundup of my time at the park. Until then, watch the video above, check out some of the great pictures, and form your own opinion – and certainly don’t hold back from visiting the park due to my uneven thoughts!

Have you visited the new Jurassic World section at Universal Studios Hollywood, and if so, what are your thoughts? Sound off in the comments below and let us know!
