The Indominus Rex went through many revisions – and names – as it was developed for 2015’s Jurassic World. As many know, the Indominus Rex was initially called the Diabolus Rex, but before that was the Malusaurus. Thanks to concept artist Seth Engstrom, we have a look at one of her drastically different early designs!

What I find immediately fascinating is her sail running down the back – my immediate thinking is she was part Spinosaurus rather than Tyrannosaurus at this point. The colors are also quite remincent of the JP3 Spinosaurus maquette – perhaps with a little JP3 Ceratosaurus for good measure. The nasal crest is quite curious as well, whether or not it was inspired by hybrid DNA from another creature, or simply an artistic choice is unknown. Either way, this design is incredibly cool and looks quite a bit more like a monstrous hybrid than a real dinosaur when compared to the final Indominus.

While this version is simply a different color scheme variation of the other posted above, it does seem to have a different, protruding chameleon like eye. Either way, the art is an incredibly cool glimpse into the design process that led to the final creature we know and love in the film. Further, here are two other early iterations that ditched the fin on the back, and crest on the nose:

As you can see, the design fluctuated quite a bit over time – who knows what other wild iterations may exist, like the sail back designs shared by Seth Engstrom! If only Universal had released an art book – perhaps one will be made for Jurassic World 2, and will include the development of Jurassic World – as long as it’s incredibly long, detailed and filled with great images I won’t complain!
Seth also shared an early look at a Velociraptor named “Red” – many fans have speculated that this was a Velociraptor due to many toys and merchandise featuring a red Velociraptor. It’s cool to have an early glimpse at her – I really love the natural colors, and how they pop – and the inspiration from the Jurassic Park 3 design is awesome to see!
Apparently feathered designs were attempted early on, but after much debated it was decided to go retro. I think that’s best for species that are already established in the franchise, but I would certainly love to see newcomers sporting plumage in the future!

I like to make a habit of posting about fan made projects and highlighting the creative talent that stems from Jurassic fans. It’s funny how, over the years, I’ve befriended many like-minded people who – aside from their love for Jurassic Park – are filmmakers, writers, creatives in their own right.
With that said, I wanted to write about Primitive War – a new novel by Ethan Pettus. Clearly inspired by Jurassic and his love for dinosaurs, Primitive War is the story of a search and rescue team known as Vulture Squad, who are sent into an isolated jungle valley to uncover the fate of a missing platoon. As they hunt through the primordial depths of the valley, they discover horrors that not only threaten to unravel their minds, but to end their lives as well.
The cover art alone is beautiful, and while the old saying states that you should never judge a book by its cover, I certainly did when I saw this one. How very Trespasser!
The artwork and concept art from the novel that Ethan shared with me show what an action packed and terrifying adventure it will be. And for those feathered dinosaur fans, this is right up your alley!

Last week we shared storyboards that show an alternate ending for Dennis Nedry in Jurassic Park. Those storyboards were posted by Jurassic Time creator Derrick Davis, who has spent the past few weeks combing through the Early Sequence Storyboard Binder which he won at Phil Tippett’s online auction.
Today Derrick shared a new sequence, one that never made it to the final screenplay but was strikingly similar to the original scene in the novel. The sequence takes place when the park guests are introduced to the baby Velociraptor, which is revealed as so by Chief Geneticist Dr. Henry Wu. In the movie you’ll remember that the guests witness the baby Raptor break out of its shell and are concerned when Dr Wu. reveals the breed.
In these storyboards however, we can see a different scene unfold. It takes place in the Nursery, and an already hatched baby Raptor is perched upon a technician’s shoulder. Check out some highlights below!

As I stated in the previous article, it’s incredibly exciting to see such old material now come into the spotlight for us all to see. With the Jurassic Park franchise making a comeback thanks to 2015’s Jurassic World, more and more rare and previously unseen behind the scenes material is beginning to show up among fans. Derrick Davis of Jurassic Time recently won an auction that provided him with a rare glimpse at some early storyboards from the production of Jurassic Park.
The storyboards were from Dinosaur Supervisor Phil Tippett’s personal collection, and along with a number of other items, went up for auction on the Prop Store last October. Some lucky fans were able to snag some incredibly rare props and documents from the movie, and Derrick has been kind enough to share his haul online!
The storyboards show a slightly alternate ending to the Nedry vs Dilophosaurus sequence in Jurassic Park, where instead of Nedry making it inside of the Jeep and being surprised by another Dilophosaurus, he is dragged away as he tries to enter it. Check out some of the boards below:

Phil Tippett sold a huge number of his personal items in the auction showcasing his time working on the movie, along with many others.
We recently revealed the complete story arc for the unreleased Jurassic Park cartoon television series which you can check out here! The story follows on immediately from the ending of the first movie – literally in the helicopter as the survivors leave the island – and details Hammond’s plans to ensure the safety of the island and the dinosaurs on it, protecting them from poachers and a certain malicious company.

It’s now 2017, and the still untitled Jurassic World sequel begins filming this year. In fact, it begins filming in just one month at the end of February! While nothing official has been revealed about the plot yet, some tantalizing details have been hinted at by director J.A. Bayona, and writer/producer Colin Trevorrow. By piecing together what they have said, and coupling it with newly uncovered domains purchased by Universal Pictures we may finally know the Jurassic World 2 premise.
The two new domains purchased are certainly tied to the Jurassic World sequel, and are both key to deciphering the plot, but not on their own – we must first decode their meaning from hints about the story which the production team have given prior.
(Warning: while this article is pure speculation based upon interviews and domains, mild spoilers may exist)
We know Jurassic World 2 will be a darker/scarier, more serious film than its predecessor and more akin to the first Jurassic Park tackling more complex themes. While that sounds awesome, it doesn’t tell us much about the plot. Thankfully, more specific hints were given:
So, now the real kicker – the domains Universal Pictures purchased December 15th, 2016 : IslaNublarRescueMission.com and AllCreaturesHaveRights.com (and .org). The former is likely a website planned to be directly related to the film, while the latter may be something viral (like MasraniGlobal.com).
New Universal Pictures domains tied to Jurassic World 2
First things first, we are returning to Isla Nublar (the home of Jurassic Park and Jurassic World) – and the story will presumably revolve around a rescue mission. Our first thought was that we have already seen a rescue story twice, once with The Lost World (Sarah Harding), and twice with Jurassic Park 3 (Eric Kirby) – but then we began thinking about the other domain, which hearkens back to the plot points shared above. Could the rescue mission not be to save human life, but rather dinosaur life – which certainly mankind is responsible for creating?
It stands to reason that after the Jurassic World incident, not only has the park closed, but the fate of the island may be in question. We have no doubt that that world will be a little less fond of having an island full of escaped, breeding dinosaurs – the threat of them becoming free in less isolated ecosystems is nothing short of hazardous. Invasive species of the non extinct variety already threaten the delicate balance of the food-chain in the real world: letting these creatures loose could have longstanding effects, creating the very chaotic butterfly effect Ian Malcolm predicted in 1993. So, again, after the Jurassic World incident it would not surprise us if the governments of the world are humoring their destruction for the ‘greater good’.
Bary and Blue – Jurassic World (2015)
Thus sparks the debate: would a mass euthanization be ethical? Do these extinct animals have rights, or are they simply dangerous corporate property? As this debate likely rages on (and for good reason, we’d be pro-dinosaur, but it’s foolish not to consider the danger they present to the natural ecosystem) certain more empathetic parties will wish to take action, to protect the animals. Those who had a hand in their creation (such as Claire Dearing) have all the more motivation to get their hands dirty in protecting them – and of course Owen Grady would have more reasons than most to protect their livelihood, due to his relationship with Blue the Velociraptor.
We feel confident in saying Jurassic World 2 features a rescue mission on Isla Nublar to protect the dinosaurs (due to the domains), but the real question is from what (and is that the full story)? It’s certainly plausible that government entities wish to firebomb the island, much like the end of the first novel – but the more we thought about that, the less it made sense. Where could they bring the dinosaurs to live which both escapes those who sought to destroy them, while not needlessly presenting a risk to mainland ecosystems? We know Masrani Global owns Isla Sorna as well, but again, if Nublar was to be destroyed by outside forces, why not the other island? Now enters the third piece of the puzzle.

In late November, one of our team members Ryan saw an update to JurassicWorld.com – it featured an image of a Volcano, with the word ‘EPOCH’ in bold text over-top of it. When he clicked the link, it brought him to a non-existent page, and upon clicking back the image was gone. Our theory is that Universal was toying around with a Jurassic World 2 title and premise reveal, and that Epoch is part of the larger title (The Next Epoch: Jurassic World, perhaps?) and accidentally published too soon. So, humoring this, using a Volcano in the imagery was likely significant – we know one exists on Isla Nublar (Mount Sibo) – could the force that threatens the existence of these animals be an imminent eruption?

Jurassic World originally involved lots of artwork with Volcanoes, and even one of the toys showcased this concept. The Volcano is featured on the park brochure, website, and in-universe map (seen as Owen preps to use the Velociraptors with InGen). Colin Trevorrow has previously stated that the Jurassic World films were envisioned as a trilogy, and it’s likely the inclusion of this volcano was carefully planned to enable the sequel.
With all the above information, here is our best guess at a synopsis:
As an imminent volcanic eruption (or government sanctioned firebombing) threatens the fate of Isla Nublar and the dinosaurs on it, a fierce debate erupts in favor of their destruction. Despite arguments against this, Claire Dearing and Owen Grady feel a certain responsibility to launch a rescue mission to try to relocate the animals somewhere safe.
Now of course, we have no idea how Dr. Wu and InGen factor into this story concept – nor do we have any real clue if we’re on the right track or not -but time will tell! As much that remains unknown, the domains purchased certainly paint an interesting picture about the future of the franchise. Jurassic World 2 begins filming in London this February 27th, and stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, BD Wong, Justice Smith, Toby Jones, and Rafe Spall – surely news is around the corner so stay tuned.

At the start of November, many fans were lucky enough to visit the Royal Albert Hall in London to watch Jurassic Park in front of a live symphony orchestra. It was an incredible event; hearing a live orchestra perform such a perfect score by John Williams was magical, and a brilliant way to experience the movie.

Timack Creations have just released the first two chapters of their new project – an interactive online comic called Jurassic World: Regenesis. Regenesis is a collaboration between two fans, Timothy L. Glover and Jack Anthony Ewins, whose previous project was the official Jurassic World viral marketing website, Masrani Global.
The project, as stated above, is an interactive online comic featuring 2D and 3D animation, which tells a series of events that happen after the Jurassic Park incident in 1993. Dedicated to the creators and fans of the franchise, Jurassic World: Regenesis truly is a labor of love from fans to the fans, and it shows what can happen when talented and creative individuals get together to produce a piece of work.
With 2D artwork from Jack and Jaroslav Kosmina, 3D animation from Manuel Bejarano, and music from Tim, the team have created an interesting story that is fun to read through and showcases the tremendous talent that exists in this fan-base.
Above is one of Manuel’s visual effects shots seen in Regenesis, but before watching we do encourage you to head to the Regenesis website to read through the story yourself! You’ll be glad you did, and it’s worth experiencing the project the way the creators intended.
As expected with any fan project, the story is filled with references to the original films, but there are also some references to the fan-base – did you catch them?
