An Exclusive Look Inside of Jurassic World: Evolution

Dream it. Build it. Survive it. Do you remember that tagline? It’s quite simple really, and perfectly summarises what a park building game is, and especially what Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis was.

That game was loved – and still is, and fifteen years later we are set to receive the new generation’s version of this game. Jurassic World: Evolution.

A week ago, Alex and myself were lucky enough to visit Frontier Developments in Cambridge and meet with many of the team that are developing this upcoming park-building game. We saw the game in it’s final stages of development and met with various members of the animation team, the creative team, the sound team, who are now putting those crucial final touches on the game.

We also had the opportunity to play the game. And that we did. For a good few hours! We played on the islands of Isla Matanceros and Isla Muerta, two of the Five Deaths island chain that sits near Isla Nublar.

While most of what we were able to play has been previously revealed, the camera mode within the Park Ranger Jeeps is something previously unseen, and I don’t believe the Dilophosaurus attacks on the park visitors has been seen before!

View our full gallery below!

We had a lot of fun at Frontier and we thoroughly enjoyed our time playing Jurassic World: Evolution! Our friends at Jurassic Unicast were also attending and have shared their own content from the day on their channel!

The game is available on Tuesday June 12 and is available on PC, Playstation 4 and Xbox One. Don’t miss out – be sure to pre-order your copy now!

John Hammond Still Looms Over Jurassic World in New ‘Fallen Kingdom’ Featurette!

According to the online viral campaign for Masrani Global that accompanied Jurassic World’s release in 2015, John Parker Hammond passed away shortly after the events seen in The Lost World: Jurassic Park in 1997.

Despite that, the legend of the entrepreneur is still alive and well more than twenty years later. In a new featurette for next month’s ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’, we see Claire Dearing in Benjamin Lockwood’s manor standing in front of a large portrait of none other than John Parker Hammond, who’s bears a striking resemblance to when we last saw him in The Lost World – though perhaps a little healthier.

While little else can be gleaned from this appearance, it’s clear that Lockwood’s relationship with Hammond, and it’s deterioration before the events of Jurassic Park, will be an interesting look back into the mythos of the franchise.

Check out the featurette below:

Accompanying this featurette comes the Production Information for the movie which is now available to view online and you can find embedded below!

While this may not offer any groundbreaking spoilers from the plot of the movie, it does give us a chance to get to know the characters before their debut as well as setting the stage for what we will see next month. Take a look below!

The document also dives into detail about the talent behind the camera including a short piece detailing director J.A. Bayona joining Team Jurassic.

The website CollegeHumor has released a new comedy sketch featuring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard as their Jurassic World characters Owen Grady and Claire Dearing. In the sketch, Owen and Claire are at an airport trying to pass Blue the Velociraptor off as a service animal.

Claire Dearing Invites You To Adopt-A-Dino Through the DPG

Happy National Dinosaur day!! On this day it’s only appropriate that another video installment from the DPG is released. For those of you who don’t know (anyone?), the DPG is short for the “Dinosaur Protection Group.” This is an in-universe organization lead by Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) who is on a mission to save the dinosaurs from an exploding volcano looming over our beloved Isla Nublar (got that?).

In this newest video Claire invites you all to Adopt-A-Dino to show your support of your favorite dinosaur! Once you click “begin” it allows you to choose a dinosaur, but it just doesn’t list some names, it also lists some information and an age which is an interesting detail!

Once you choose your dinosaur, you will receive a “Certificate of Adoption.” This is really a fun way to involve young kids (and those young at heart) to be interactive with the and feel apart of the movie universe. It’s just brings us all once step further into the film and I love that Universal is doing this. It may be something simple, but an excellent touch for marketing and treat for the fans.

Visit AdoptADino.com now to get started!

If you haven’t already, do check out the DPG website for some fun articles written by members Zia Rodriguez (Daniella Pineda) and Franklin Webb (Justice Smith) as well as live updates of volcanic activity.

There is also a new mini featurette released with this DPG video. Most of the clippings in that video can be found in the On Set Snapchat video from earlier this year. However, Bryce Dallas Howard brings up a new dinosaur, the sinoceratops, and we get our first good look at that dinosaur along with the Stygimoloch.

Check that video out below!

What do you think of the new interactive feature? Let us know what dinosaur you are most excited to adopt!

Can You Survive Isla Nublar? ‘Jurassic Park: Danger’ Board Game is Out Now!

The T. rex, the Dilophosaurus and the Velociraptor are back! You can now play through your own adventure on Isla Nublar thanks to the new board game Jurassic Park: Danger!

With thanks to the wonderful people at Ravensburger we got the chance to play the upcoming board game and experience the fun adventures that Isla Nublar has to offer.

This is a 2-5 player game – one player will control the dinosaurs, the other player(s) controlling the humans from paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant to computer programmer Dennis Nedry. The synopsis for the game is as follows:

The first visitors have arrived at Jurassic Park to see its miraculous dinosaurs firsthand. But chaos has hit Isla Nublar – the power is out, and the prehistoric creatures are on the hunt! One player controls the T. Rex, Dilophosaurus, and Velociraptor, prowling through the jungle to attack the humans. The other players team up as characters from the classic movie, struggling to get Jurassic Park back online and escape the island before they become pray!

The board game itself forms Isla Nublar when pieced together, with surrounding borders, perimeter pieces and the central ‘Start’ piece. It includes a number of iconic locations on the island including the maintenance shed, control center and visitors center.

The goals for the dinosaurs and humans are different – if you’re playing as the dinosaurs then your aim is to eliminate 3 human characters to win. If you’re playing as the humans, you must work together to Activate the locations (the maintenance shed etc), achieve your character’s person goal to collect the goal token, and then make it to the helicopter!

There are 10 character’s from the original movie to play as and while many would choose the heroes of Jurassic Park, the villain or even the lawyer may be a wiser choice in certain situations. Each character can use their unique ‘free action’ that helps the team reach their objective, even Dennis Nedry! Ellie Sattler’s free action is called ‘Dino Droppings’ and when played, a character in the same place on the board can return TWO of their used cards back into their pile.

The dinosaurs themselves are (as expected) incredibly powerful and will do whatever they can to stop the human characters leaving the island. The dinosaurs intention is to stay ahead of the humans and block them from progression at any point they can, and with the additional ‘Free Actions’ they can play, there’s a strong chance the dinosaurs with come out on top!

The number of characters, cards and gameplay options mens the board game itself has a big replay value with variable strategies to win!

The design and artwork designed for this game show that the designers at Ravensburger are fans of the franchise and if you’re looking for a couple of hours of fun then this is worth picking up! Jurassic Park: Danger brings back all the nostalgia from the original film and provides a fun adventure for families and friends.

Jurassic Park: Danger is a game for ages 10 and up, can be played by 2-5 players and the designers give an estimated game time of 50 minutes. The game is retailing for $24.99 and is available exclusively at Target. Will you be playing the game? Let us know in the comments section below!

‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ Vr Experience Following Blue Surviving on the Volcanic Island Now Available!

In a surprise announcement made at the Facebook F8 Developer Conference, Universal Pictures and Felix & Paul Studios have unveiled Jurassic World: Blue – a new VR experience that is now available!

Jurassic World: Blue (episode 1) takes place 4 years after the events of the 2015 film, which is the same time frame Fallen Kingdom takes place in, and follows Blue as she tries to survive on a now volcanic and unstable Isla Nublar. The live action environment footage was shot on location in Hawaii, with CG dinosaurs and effects done by Industrial Light and Magic creating a realistic and authentic Jurassic adventure, filled with the thrills you expect!

The first episode of Jurassic World: Blue is now available for Oculus Go and Oculus Rift – check out the full press release below, and the gallery of impressive screenshots!

Facebook F8 Developer Conference – Felix & Paul Studios, the EMMY® Award-winning creator of cinematic virtual reality experiences, and Universal Pictures today launched Jurassic World: Blue—in conjunction with the launch of the new Oculus Go standalone VR headset.

The two-part cinematic virtual reality experience was created by Felix & Paul Studios, Universal Pictures and Facebook’s Oculus—with visual effects and animation by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) and sound by Headspace Studio. Directed by Félix Lajeunesse and Paul Raphaël, each chapter of Jurassic World: Blue delivers a single, continuous take, combining live-action and CG in 360° 3D—resulting in some of the longest visual-effects shots ever created.

Jurassic World: Blue is now available for Oculus Go and Oculus Rift. Episode one is launching today, and episode two is coming soon. Each of the two four-minute virtual-reality experiences was captured and produced using Felix & Paul Studios’ full-spectrum VR platform, including the studio’s proprietary, state-of the art cameras and pre- and post-production software suite.

“We’re thrilled to bring the magic of this iconic series to VR with Oculus Go. The fluid camera moves, as well as the phenomenal animation and rendering, create a sense of presence and immersion that makes Jurassic World: Blue a new high watermark in cinematic VR,” said Colum Slevin, Head of Experiences, Oculus.

Set on Isla Nublar, Jurassic World: Blue occurs four years after the catastrophic events in which Jurassic World has been abandoned and dinosaurs have overtaken the island. Amid the threat of volcanic eruption, we encounter the highly intelligent velociraptor Blue on her quest for survival. Viewers follow Blue as she hunts for food, searches for signs of fellow life, and battles some of the island’s most threatening predators…amid the imminent destruction of the island.

“Universal is excited to partner once again with Felix & Paul Studios and release our new virtual reality companion experience to the Jurassic World series,” said Austin Barker, EVP, Universal Pictures Creative Content. “Felix & Paul Studios has created a stunning experience, one that represents spectacular advancements in cinematic, narrative storytelling in VR. It’s thrilling to bring Jurassic World to life in this way.”

Jurassic World: Blue is a follow-up to 2015’s highly acclaimed VR experience Jurassic World: Apatosaurus, co-produced by Felix & Paul Studios, Universal and Oculus.

“Jurassic World: Blue invites viewers to immerse themselves in what it would feel like to be in close proximity with those stunning creatures—with the mixture of striking beauty and fear that accompanies this unique VR experience,” said Félix Lajeunesse, creative director and co-founder of Felix & Paul Studios.

Intriguingly, these screenshots answer some burning questions about the Jurassic World dinosaur lore – we can see a fresh egg filled nest, as well as a baby Triceratops, confirming that not all Jurassic World dinosaurs are female, and they are breeding in the wild. Further, there appears to be a dead Parasaurolophus in the one image near the nest, providing some hope that the species will indeed appear in Fallen Kingdom, in spite of prior evidence otherwise.

You can download Jurassic World: Blue for free from the Oculus Go store here, and from the Oculus Rift store here! If you don’t have a VR headset, fret not, as BestinSlot on YouTube recorded his experience with the VR film:

Do you have a VR headset, and if so, what do you want Jurassic World: Blue to offer? Sound off in the comments below, and as always, stay tuned for everything Jurassic!

Bryce Dallas Howard and BD Wong Join the Cast of ‘Jurassic World Evolution’!

Dream it… build it… survive it! If having the voice of Dr. Ian Malcolm easing you through the upcoming video game Jurassic World Evolution wasn’t enough, fans can now rejoice with the announcement that both Bryce Dallas Howard and BD Wong have joined the cast!

In an announcement by the developers themselves, the two actors will reprise their roles as Claire Dearing and Dr. Henry Wu in the upcoming game:

Frontier Developments plc (AIM: FDEV), in partnership with Universal, today announced Bryce Dallas Howard and BD Wong will reprise their roles as Claire Dearing and Dr. Henry Wu, respectively, in the upcoming video game, Jurassic World Evolution. They join Jeff Goldblum – as Dr. Ian Malcolm – in an all-new story that touches on key characters and events from across the Jurassic film franchise as players attempt to successfully build and run their own Jurassic World.

Jurassic World Evolution places players in control of operations on the legendary island of Isla Nublar and the surrounding islands of the Muertes Archipelago. Players will build their own Jurassic World as they bioengineer new dinosaur breeds and construct attractions, containment and research facilities. Every choice leads to a different path and spectacular challenges arise when “life finds a way.”

Both characters play vital roles in the upcoming sequel, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and will no doubt provide excellent commentary through the Evolution video game.

Jurassic World Evolution will release digitally first on June 12 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with the physical release dropping two weeks later on July 3 2018. Be sure to pre-order the game now to avoid disappointment!

While you will not be able to play as Ian Malcolm, the character will return in the game in an advisory role to guide you through the decision making process, much like the voices that guided you through the gameplay in Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis.

Claire Dearing is Unrepentant in New Dinosaur Protection Group Updates

When Jurassic World released, the online discussion was mired with debate and controversy – sometimes forced, othertimes earned.

One of the talking points that stuck (other than high heels and Zara’s death) was Clarie Dearing’s (played by Bryce Dallas Howard) ownership of blame for the Jurassic World incident, which led to many civilian, staff, dinosaur, and private military deaths. As the parks Operations Manager, audiences questioned why the movie didn’t end with her being jailed – an argument that at the time I felt was weak, with no real gravitas.

The movie goes out of its way to show that InGen and Simon Masrani were running the show when it came to genetic research plus security controls, and that many less than savory characters were able to back channel their own projects due to Masrani’s eccentric aloofness. Claire’s responsibilities essentially fell into making their workings flow as an entertaining resort for guests and a profitable endeavor for their shareholders. Yes, she was part of the discussions that led to the Indominus Rex, and therefore owns some of the blame of the events that followed – however, she was second fiddle to many higher on the chain of command, and was not a Hammond like entrepreneur and owner.

So when people often called for to be jailed, I found myself going to bat for her character. It seemed most people arguing for her to be behind bars simply didn’t like her as a character, and were using this as an excuse to write her off. I don’t love Owen or Claire, as I felt both played out like comic book heroes, rather than real world people – but I don’t hate them, and feel that there is a story to be told from both players, with Claire offering more humanity than people gave credit.

So why is it that with every Dinosaur Protection Group update, I’m becoming less and less a fan of Claire’s?

In a new happy go lucky video from the DPG, Claire Dearing calls for your support in saving the dinosaurs. Much like the website of the advocacy group, it focuses on a friendly vibe, and pulls on the heartstrings of viewers of their nostalgic dinosaur encounters. While this is reflective of many forms of grassroots activism, it seems to sidestep many pertinent controversies and conflicts, burying them beneath a few layers of friendly gloss.

In the video above, Claire doesn’t remind viewers of the role she played in exploiting these animals herself – something I am readily able to forgive, should she take more ownership. In fact, the entire website paints the DPG as a naive organization, not ready to fully discuss the impact and implications resurrected prehistoric life has on the greater ecosystem. I suppose what really irks me, is that Claire and the DPG seem more interested in preserving the experience of the world being able to enjoy dinosaurs, rather than their value as a lifeform damned by mankinds actions.

The imminent eruption of Mount Sibo appears to be a convenient rallying call, but not the the core ethical dilemma driving the seemingly well meaning, but out of touch organization.

The inability to truly accept responsibility, nor deal with the greater implications and impact her past has had on animal rights was double downed upon with today’s update. In a faux newspaper article titled ‘OPINION: DINOSAUR RIGHTS – BIRTH OF AN ACTIVIST’, the foundation is set upon where the film will pick up. The debate on whether the dinosaurs of Isla Nublar have rights or if their corporate property rages on, and many are pointing fingers.

Perhaps most surprings is that Claire isn’t owning up to her role in the events that came before as way to earn authority over the talking points being presented, but rather shifts blame to Dr. Henry Wu only, painting him as a seedy villain for the press to focus upon. Perhaps Dr. Wu is a villain, or perhaps his role in the events of the past and future are more nuanced – while he certainly has a lot to answer for, Claire pushing that argument so strongly only acts to delegitmize any claim she attempts to showcase that she accepts any responsibility, and has grown as a person because of it.

As a viewer, I want to support the DPG. I want to feel that the organization is able to tackle the larger elements at play, and offer an actual intellectual argument for their cause. Animal rights are important, even within fiction, and the theme behind this film offers a nuanced ethical dilemma playing as the backdrop of the dino carnage that no doubt will play out. However, at this point, it seems the DPG are not prepared for the endeavor they’ve put themselves at forefront of – and perhaps that is an element within the film.

Will the DPG’s well meaning, but ill approached antics be exploited and lead to the death of more people, and the mistreatment of even more prehistoric fauna? It seems likely. I just hope Claire accepts more blame than the website currently implies, as her likability of a character, and believability of growth depends on it.

“Some of the worst things imaginable have been done with the best intentions.” – Dr. Alan Grant

There is a line in the sand between clear actions of good and evil, but most real world events and individuals never come close to a definitive side, operating unknowingly in a blurred grey area. What makes Jurassic Park so special is its focus and embrace of that concept. As of now, it seems the DPG is attempting to paint Claire as purely good, and Dr. Wu as a malicious counterweight – something that doesn’t sit right with me as a fan of films, nor do I feel the onscreen evidence entirely supports this.

Perhaps I’m asking for more nuance – or perhaps we’re given a peek into the DPG’s bias and Claire’s personality, who still has room to learn and grow. All will be answered this June with the release of Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom.

Agree – disagree – debate and share your thoughts in the comments below, and as always stay tuned for the latest news!
