The upcoming Jurassic World sequel – slated to release July 2, 2025 – continues to add to its roster of production talent! Lincoln Lawyer and Magnificent Seven actor Manuel Garcia-Rulfo is joining the film in a lead role alongside Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey. Plus, cinematographer John Mathieson, of Gladiator and Logan acclaim, has boarded to shoot the film, which begins production next month in Thailand.
This news was first reported by Deadline, who shared:
On this the day of our lord Ryan Gosling (and the release day of his new film The Fall Guy) director David Leitch has addressed his involvement in and departure from the upcoming Jurassic World 4. On the latest episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Leitch and his producing partner Kelly McCormick discussed filmmaking in general as well as their conversations towards being attached to the 2025 dinosaur movie. You can listen to the full episode below:
Contrary to priorreporting, Leitch described their side of the situation as ultimately lacking the creative control he and his partner feel they have earned, saying:
The pair also said that they felt they were “finally acknowledged in the business” when Spielberg approached them and feel “so fortunate” to have spent time with the director of Jurassic Park, who is producing the upcoming film.
Leitch also expressed admiration for Jurassic World 4’s new director Gareth Edwards, saying he had “love and respect” for the “brilliant” filmmaker.
It’s certainly interesting that further comments have even arisen on this situation. All press is good press? Have we dodged a bullet train? What would the David Leitch-directed Jurassic World 4 have been like?

Do you remember the last time you saw a dinosaur? Well, for Jurassic fans, it was officially back in 2022 when ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ roared into theaters. In 2025, we’ll all get our next chance to see our beloved dinosaurs from the franchise (and likely new ones) making their way to theater screens once again. However, the film still hasn’t even been shot yet! Strong rumors and scoops point to (Jurassic) June being the start of filming for the Gareth Edwards-helmed project. Sky Studios and Thailand are confirmed locations for ‘Jurassic World 4’ (unofficial title), as well as Malta. In a new article today from Times of Malta, the country has expanded upon just how it will likely be used in the latest Jurassic film.
“The production has booked almost all facilities at the Malta Film Studios in Kalkara this summer and is set to shoot between July and September, multiple film industry sources told Times of Malta. The world-renowned franchise will only film part of its latest movie in Malta and there are no shoots scheduled on location.”
What’s interesting about this reveal is that while ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ filmed on-location in Malta for its entertaining middle portion of the film (which included exteriors for the ‘dinosaur black market’ and the famous, or infamous, chase scene between Chris Pratt and a pack of Atrociraptors), it never used any of its studios or facilities. The reveal of the new entry in the series not including any “on location” shoots is also quite revealing, as this possibly nixes any theory of returning to Malta’s locations from ‘Dominion.’ This also puzzles us further as to whether the new film really is a sequel, a prequel, or something in-between. In that case, why shoot at Malta’s facilities at all when they already are shooting in facilities at Sky Studios?
“The Malta Film Studios offers, among other facilities, two infinite-horizon water tanks that film productions generally use for large-scale sound effects and underwater shooting.”
Well, the article reveals the possible answer for that, too. “Water tanks.” Big ones. The filmmakers must have known of them from when they filmed ‘Dominion’ and remembered for this film. Does this spell a return for the popular Mosasaur, as featured in the ‘Jurassic World’ trilogy? It is also possible we are getting an entirely new prehistoric sea reptile, such as a Plesiosaur. Or there could just be an intense sequence in the water without any dinosaur or prehistoric creature at all (but that would certainly be a missed opportunity). We’ll just have to wait and see.
There is still so much we don’t know about the new film from director Gareth Edwards and screenwriter David Koepp! It still hasn’t even been officially confirmed that star Scarlett Johanson is truly in the film (although the safety of that rumor is pretty much guaranteed at this point). What we do know is that all of us are excited to find out on July 2nd, 2025!
Are you intrigued by this news? Do you still think we’ll see any of the Malta locations from ‘Dominion?’ Will the mosasaur make a return? Leave your comments below and stay tuned to Jurassic Outpost for the latest!
British actor Jonathan Bailey is casting his British eyes on the upcoming British movie Jurassic World 4. Deadline is reporting that the British Bridgerton star may have found his next role in the upcoming Jurassic Park sequel alongside Scarlett Johansson – who also now appears to be confirmed.
The actor is British and filming will be taking place in Britain, as well as Thailand and Malta!
Bailey has strong ties with Universal as he is set to appear in its anticipated Wicked adaptation. The studio is high on the project after making it the big reveal during its CinemaCon presentation, and sources they were high on his performance following the shoot.
On top of Wicked, Bailey is also coming off Fellow Travelers. The limited series also starred Matt Bomer and earned Bailey a Critics Choice Award for his work, making him a frontrunner in the Emmy race.
British born director Gareth Edwards is helming the picture and filming is expected to take place June – October of this year, with the release date July 2nd 2025 set in stone.
What do you make of this casting and what kind of role would you like him to play? Other names rumored to be in talks are Colman Domingo, Dev Patel, and Nicholas Hoult. Those names come from DanielRPK and were not reported by Deadline.
According to industry writer/influencer Daniel Richtman, British actor and filmmaker Dev Patel is in talks for a role in the next Jurassic movie, Jurassic World 4!
The actor began his career in the British teen drama Skins and made his film debut with director Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire.
Dev has had a prolific career since, most recently directing and starring in the highly praised Monkey Man.
Jurassic World 4 is stampeding its way into theaters next year on July 2, 2025! Gareth Edwards is directing, David Koepp is writing, Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall are executive producing, Scarlett Johansson is in talks to star, but there are still some unknowns…
Who’s going to shoot this film? (Greig Fraser?)
Who will create the visual effects?
Who’s going to fill the rest of the cast?
Who’s going to be creating sound?
Who… will compose the music?
Music – both orchestral and otherwise – is an integral bone in the Jurassic skeleton, and an irreplaceable part of the art and filmmaking that go into creating all of the films we love. When it comes to the narrative mediums of film and television, fans of Jurassic have experienced scores from the greatest film composer of all time, John Williams, the amazing Double D Don Davis, the inimitable Michael Giacchino, and incredibly gifted newcomers like Amie Doherty and Leo Birenberg. Whoever is brought on board by Gareth Edwards and producers to create the musical world for the next Jurassic film will be joining some pretty fantastic dinosaur music company. Will it be someone familiar, or someone new? My hope and my bet is on some new blood, but… we shall see!
Let’s talk about who we think should be the composer for the next Jurassic movie!
John Williams
The obvious choice! And while we know the GOAT Johnny Williams coming back to Jurassic isn’t too likely to happen, we had to take the time to mention it and dream for a second about John Williams Jurassic music. Jurassic Park? The Lost World? Near the top of his most iconic scores! Imagine if he came back, even just to write a new theme or piece of music like he did exceptionally well for SOLO? He has returned to other franchises to continue his musical legacy before, so it wouldn’t be unheard of. The circumstances, timing, and story would all have to line up… Regardless, we’ll always have Malcolm’s Journey as the underscore to one of the best Jurassic moments.
Amie Doherty
The next choice on our list is the composer of Jurassic World short film Battle at Big Rock, which was a hit with pretty much every Jurassic fan – it was a great display of the awe and terror that comes with dinosaurs being loose in the world, solidified by Amie’s use of Jurassic musical themes both classic and new. Musically she goes from the Jurassic World theme, to utter terror, to the Jurassic Park and Lost World themes, all within about 10 minutes. Her Jurassic experience combined with her work since then on projects like Spirit Untamed, Undone, and She-Hulk demonstrate her command of the orchestra and thematic skills, making her a perfect choice for a future Jurassic movie.
Sarah Schachner
Composer of the Predator franchise film Prey Sarah Schachner is next on our list. She also created the scores for The Lazarus Effect, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare I & II, Assassins Creed: Valhalla, Anthem, and multiple other video games and series. She has experience adapting previous thematic material into new projects with Prey while simultaneously creating something fresh and new. On top of her experience in the science-fiction realm, her video game music is top-notch, emotional, and action-packed – she could be a great musical fit for the next Jurassic.
Leo Birenberg & Zach Robinson
Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous composer Leo Birenberg would be a solid talent to call upon for the next Jurassic film. His work over 5 seasons and 50 episodes of the show contain some excellent Jurassic music, fitting in perfectly with the island settings and dinosaurs throughout. He and his scoring partner Zach Robinson have worked recently on Cobra Kai, Twisted Metal, and Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. Their modern style with familiar orchestral elements could work well with a modern Jurassic story, not to mention, having another composer with a bit of Jurassic experience would be great!
Hans Zimmer
The next composer finds himself on our list in part because he has experience working with director Gareth Edwards on his latest feature The Creator. No doubt you’ll recognize the name of legendary musician and film composer Hans Zimmer! He’s created countless iconic scores for films like Pirates of the Caribbean, The Lion King, The Dark Knight, Inception, Interstellar, Dune, and Gladiator (to name only a few). His music from Backdraft was used in an incredible trailer for The Lost World: Jurassic Park, so technically he has touched Jurassic before! His connection to Gareth and iconic, engrossing music are big upsides, and while his more modern style doesn’t really fit Jurassic at all in my opinion, his more orchestral music in the past would give me hope if he were chosen to score the next Jurassic.
James Newton Howard
James Newton Howard: composer for amazing films like Disney’s Dinosaur, Atlantis, The Hunger Games, Signs, and the 2005 King Kong remake – has a strong musical argument to score a Jurassic film. Howard’s music exudes adventure and suspense in its brass fanfares, sweeping strings, and the overall power he provides the orchestra with his writing. He’s written breathtaking music for dinosaurs more than once already, but is also clearly able to create chilling and exciting music for science fiction, fantasy, and adventure stories. Listening to his score for Dinosaur recently… I would be very excited at the prospect of his take on a Jurassic score.
Kara Talve and Anže Rozman
Composers Kara Talve and Anže Rozman are no strangers to creating music for dinosaurs in wild global habitats. Their score for the AppleTV+ series Prehistoric Planet is massive, grand, and majestic, and they even created their own dinosaur instruments to add to the orchestra! Outside of dinosaurs their work, both separately and together, ranges from The Simpsons to Faraway Downs to BBC’s The Planets. Kara and Anže enjoy creating excitement and wonder with their music, and the vast emotional and stylistic range in their Prehistoric Planet score alone provides an intriguing foundation should they ever get the opportunity to score a Jurassic project.
Natalie Holt
Another composer who has followed in John Williams’ footsteps while also paving a path of her own is Natalie Holt. She took on the Star Wars universe with her score for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, and has also scored exciting projects like The Princess, Marvel’s Loki series, Knightfall, and a project unfortunately shelved by idiot execs at Warner Brothers, Batgirl. Regardless, she did a fantastic job carrying on John Williams’ styles and themes in Obi-Wan Kenobi. That and her engaging, mysterious style on Loki would have me very intrigued to hear her take on some Jurassic music.
Joe Kraemer
Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, Jack Reacher, and The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then The Bigfoot all boast music by composer Joe Kraemer. While those titles may not sound too related to Jurassic, their music certainly is. Kraemer’s grasp of traditional orchestra and use of brassy motifs and rhythmic strings could be great for a Jurassic adventure. His somewhat old-school approach to huge action set pieces and more intimate moments of espionage in Mission Impossible followed by the danger and uncertainty his music aids in Jack Reacher could pair very well with a science fiction dinosaur story likely filled with international intrigue and suspense.
Alexandre Desplat
Last on our list, but certainly not least, is Alexandre Desplat – a solid orchestral composer who is extremely creative thematically and in his choice of instruments. Not to mention, he’s worked with the man, the myth, the Gareth on a reptile movie before! His score catalog speaks for itself with intense and bombastic action music for Godzilla, sweeping, emotional music for the final two Harry Potter film installments, and quirky, tunes for many Wes Anderson films. He also created suspenseful, yet poignant music for The Shape of Water, and engaging thriller music for Argo. My gut says the next Jurassic score has a good chance of coming from the mind of Desplat – his experience with director Gareth Edwards is valuable, and his ability to work an orchestra to create captivating, thematic music no matter the genre could make a flawless pairing with Jurassic.
So, that’s our list of the top composers we think could score the next Jurassic – Jurassic World 4. However, there are a few honorable mentions who may also find their way to a new Jurassic project in the future:
Jongnic Bontemps (affectionately know as JB), composer of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
Henry Jackman, Marvel and Jumanji composer.
Ludwig Goransson, known for his sweeping hybrid scores for Black Panther, The Mandalorian, and Oppenheimer.
Christophe Beck, composer of Marvel projects and other great orchestral works.
John Powell of How to Train Your Dragon, Bourne, and Solo: A Star Wars Story fame.
And of course, a name that could still happen for Jurassic, Michael Giacchino, whose bombastic, sweeping, and epic music left a large dinosaur footprint on the Jurassic World trilogy. Giacchino has been the Jurassic composer for three films in a row – would it make sense for him to simply continue? He started out in the world of Jurassic by scoring The Lost World and Warpath: Jurassic Park video games before making his way onto bigger things. Similarly, Amie Doherty and Leo Birenberg have composed music for smaller Jurassic projects, and it could be a perfect time for them to move onto bigger projects as well. While I’m hoping for some new blood in the Jurassic musical world, Giacchino’s experience with Jurassic and Gareth Edwards keeps him in the possible conversation going forward.
But, we’ll have to see which composer nature (or the producers and studio) chooses to create the music for the next Jurassic story.
Who do you think should be the composer for Jurassic World 4? Who did we miss on our list? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
According to a new listing from an industry source, Jurassic World 4 is getting set to film in the UK (as previously reported) and also Thailand and Malta! The production is said to begin June 17th of this year and continue through October 18th.
It seems Gareth Edwards’ Jurassic movie will return to locations familiar to him, with his last feature The Creator being filmed partially in Thailand, and familiar to the Jurassic franchise, with Malta being the site of a major set piece in Jurassic World: Dominion.
Watch our full breakdown of the new production news and read more below!
Thanks to Reel News Hawaii we received a production listing that reveals some exciting new information about the next Jurassic movie! The source is considered legitimate but unfortunately based on their own terms we cannot show the image of the listing (although it wouldn’t be too hard to find yourself) – but we can examine the details.
The details relating to the production companies involved all align and for obvious reasons we don’t need to dive into those specifics.
The previously rumored Hawaii and Los Angeles locations are not in this listing, but Thailand and Malta are! Thailand is certainly a new location for the franchise – the islands of Isla Nublar and Isla Sorna have always been represented by the islands of Hawaii. Jurassic Park 3 briefly considered New Zealand for filming, but as we know the movie ultimately did film on the islands of Oahu and Kauai, as well as extensive indoor studio work.
Thailand is an absolutely beautiful country – and a place director Gareth Edwards is familiar with. His latest feature The Creator filmed on location in Bangkok and other locations in Thailand, and Gareth seems to love a bit of globe-trotting – all of his movies have filmed in diverse and wonderful locations around the world. Plus, the coastlines of Thailand alone give off major Jurassic Park island vibes.
We don’t know what the story is and we don’t know when this movie will be set, so at this point we can’t say how they will be utilizing Thailand as a location. But what do you think? Do you believe Thailand will be standing in as the infamous islands’ coastlines?
Let’s talk about the other location – Malta. Fans of the franchise will recognize this location as the black market in Jurassic World: Dominion. A fairly large chunk of that movie filmed on location in Malta, the dinosaur black market was a major plot point in the movie, and it’s where we finally meet Barry again after he went missing for an entire movie.
The return of Malta could very much indicate that we will be seeing Dominion locations again, which might be telling us that this movie is indeed going to be a sequel, set in a world after Jurassic World: Dominion. However, it could be unrelated entirely. Malta is a diverse and beautiful location, one Gareth and his cinematographer surely have many plans for.
The last location on the listing is London, UK, which as previously reported likely indicates sounds stage and studio filming, but could mean more diverse locations for the film.
The final piece of news to discuss from this listing is the filming dates themselves. We have all been hearing JUNE as a “cameras start rolling date” but this production listing seems to have confirmed as such:
Jurassic World 4 will be filming from June 17th to October 18th, 2024.
Also, the title and information on the listing is worth discussing. The title is “JURASSIC WORLD 4” but it then goes on to say “aka JURASSIC CITY / JURASSIC PARK REBOOT.”
The “JURASSIC PARK REBOOT” is making us wonder what the movie might be. It’s not a remake, but the term brings to mind that maybe it won’t be tying itself to the previous movies as much as we thought, or perhaps maybe it’s not a direct sequel to what has come before…
Or maybe, that information on this listing doesn’t mean too much. We will have to see how it all plays out.
Thank you again to our friends at Reel News for sharing this with us! While we cannot 100% confirm this information, it is from a very legitimate source and the details appear to line up, including the numbers and emails connected to it. If you do find it, no, please do not go emailing and phoning those numbers!
And remember, things like film productions are always subject to change.
What do you think of these new filming locations and dates and how do you think they will be utilized? Will we see a return of the dinosaur black market, of the Jurassic Park islands, or are we about to get something entirely new?
Let us know your thoughts down below, and stay tuned to Jurassic Outpost for the latest.
A couple of weeks back we reported that Scarlett Johansson had been offered the lead role in the upcoming movie. The rumor came from notable insider Jeff Snieder, and today his exclusive was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.
Scarlett Johansson is taking a bite out of a new blockbuster. The actor is in talks to join Universal’s new Jurassic World movie, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Universal is moving quickly on the film, which has a July 2, 2025, release date. Gareth Edwards is directing the new Jurassic World, which has a script from Jurassic Park scribe David Koepp. Edwards stepped into the role after David Leitch exited following a short attachment to the project.
The film returns Johansson to the world of franchises. She starred as Black Widow in a number of Marvel Studios movies, including the Avengers features, but unlike some co-stars in the superhero world, has had no trouble breaking out in other projects. She has earned two Oscar nominations, for Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit. She has a voice role in the upcoming animated feature Transformers One, and has a big-budget Apple feature co-starring Channing Tatum also due out this year.
The actress is more recently known for her role as Marvel’s Black Widow and Midge Campbell in Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City. She has starred in a fantastic array of movies – Under the Skin, Chef, The Prestige, The Island… the list goes on.
You can read the report from THR here, and we summarize all we know about this casting in the video below, including the fact that Jennifer Lawrenceturned down this role before talks began with Scarlett. We also show John Campea’s reaction to the news in which he speculates that this is likely a done deal.
What do YOU think of this potential casting – would you like to see Scarlett Johansson lead the next adventure? And where would you like that adventure to take place?
