Jurassic World the Exhibition coming to Philadelphia Nov. 25th, 2016!

It’s official (again)! Jurassic World the Exhibition will arrive in the US this November, its first stop: Philadelphia Pennsylvania. We exclusively announced the city as the next location back in March of this year, and it was later confirmed in July by its new home, the Franklin Institute. However, it seems their confirmation was a bit premature as yesterday the news was again announced ‘exclusively’ via USA Today.

jwtedung

Currently residing in Melbourne Australia, Jurassic World the Exhibition is an innovative interactive tour like no other. Created by Imagine Exhibitions in partnership with Creature Technology Company, the exhibition takes you to Isla Nublar, and face to face with numerous dinosaur species via life sized animatronics. Check out our video walk-through of the Australian version of the tour (Spoiler warning!), or read on to see what’s new.

While details are scarce, our understanding is the the experience has continued to evolve behind the scenes in preparation of its debut in the United States.  Tweaks to make the experience more immersive as well as flow comfortably in its new home have been made (such as climbing through a log to first see the Indominus). New attractions such as the ‘Raptor Training Paddock’ have been confirmed by the ‘Philly Voice’, and it seems reasonable to expect other surprises as well. Our guess: perhaps some props from the films can make an appearance alongside, or the Jurassic World VR experience resurrected.

JWTEphillyRaptor

Of course, with something this cool happening it only makes sense for fans to try to arrange an official meetup! Stay tuned, as we’re hoping to arrange something like that for the upcoming debut.. we’ll be sure to share more as plans become formally fleshed out.

Are you excited for Jurassic World the Exhibition, and are there any changes or additions you’d like to see at the tour? Sound off in the comments below, and stay tuned for the latest news!

Review: Hasbro Jurassic World ‘Hybrid Rampage’ Indominus Rex

The fearsome hybrid Indominus Rex is terrifying and unpredictable. Born in captivity, she on the loose stalking her prey. Watch out! She’s rampaging across Jurassic World!

HRIboxed

Hasbro’s Jurassic World ‘Hybrid Rampage’ Indominus Rex is now appearing in stores and online, retailing at $34.99. This is a brand new sculpt, and was first shown off at Toy Fair 2016. Measuring 22 inches long, she is actually about 2 inches larger than the 2015 ‘Bad Boy’ Indominus Rex. She features articulated legs, left arm lever activated ‘Chomping Jaws’ & ‘Fang Reveal’,  button activated ‘Spike Reveal’, and a free to move articulated right arm. Plus, she’s electronic and features numerous different roaring sounds! What’s not to love?

HRIbanner

The first thing that stands out about this toy to me is its clean, crisp white coloration. While it has a tendency to wash out in photos a bit, it really pops and looks fantastic on the toy. The color scheme shines with the addition of the clearly defined reddish orange striping patterns running the length of her head and body, applied with a mildly metallic sheen. Her underbelly, hands, and feet are painted with an incredibly metallic gold paint – it looks really good in my opinion, but could have used better blending work. The orbital and fenstra sockets are filled with a dark, brownish purple paint which gives her face a sinister and skull like appearance. The eyes are nicely detailed, conveying a mean look, and featuring four different colors. The inside of the mouth is painted a solid, flat dark purple, and the teeth a cream color – sadly the claws are unpainted.

OpenMouthCLose

The detail work on the sculpt is really great, and captures the Indominus Rex fantastically – albeit with larger, more stylized spikes. The teeth, claws, scutes, spikes and other finer details are all shaped very nicely, while still lending themselves to safe play. The skin detail feels very hand crafted, with each scale and scute inter-playing with the muscle and skeletal structure – something most Jurassic World toys were severely lacking. Unfortunately, the right flank of the toy features six visible screw holes, however these are far less offensive than those seen in prior releases. The biggest issue with the sculpt is the feet. While they look great, they are not proportioned for the weight of the toy, leading to major balance issues (surely to frustrate both kids and collectors).

Screw Holes

The toy is made out of hard plastic which is fairly lightweight. It doesn’t feel as cheap as generic toys offered by competitors, though its lightness does feel quite strange for a Jurassic Park toy and gives a sense of added fragility. The sound quality sits at a nice middle ground, neither too loud nor too quiet. The sounds can accidentally activate in play, as the jaw hinge is loose and can open and close from momentum rather easily. Otherwise, the sounds are activated by the spike reveal button on her left flank, and the ‘chomping jaw’ activation via her left arm.

SpikeReveal

The spike reveal works rather nicely – one firm push of the button, and they pop out and stay in place. Another push, and they recede back into the neutral pose. The chomping mechanism is a lot of fun – when it works. It has a tendency to get stuck, and not complete its activation without further nudging of the arm. Ideally, the arm is pulled back, and upon release it resets and activates a randomized amount of chomping motions (up to 14), plus different roars. It’s quite cool when it works, but I worry that so many reports of it being faulty straight out of the package may lead to complete brokenness via casual play.

Rawr

The toy sizes nicely compared to the rest of the Jurassic World lineup, and Jurassic Park toys of the past. This toy has notably more size to it (helped by better proportions) than other large offerings from the 2015 range, and is quite eye catching. Not only is it longer that the previous large Indominus Rex, it stands taller at the hips, and is wider overall. Its head and arms are lightly smaller, and legs slightly larger, but all look more natural. Honestly, this is the perfect sized toy.

Bad Girls

Overall, this is easily my favorite toy from the Jurassic World lineup, and is the first that looks at home next to past Jurassic Park items. I really dig the sculpt, colors, play features and sounds – but am certainly bummed by the quality control issues on the chomping mechanism, plus item balance. For a collector it’s frustrating, but for a parent it’s a nightmare and for a child, a letdown. However, overall this toy skews positive in my eyes – and it’s important not to forget that target audience:

(Used with permission)

If that adorable video doesn’t prove this toy is a must buy, I don’t know what will. Should future releases have the chomping gimmick fixed, and feature better balance it’s a near perfect toy. Hopefully the QA issues are short lived, as this overall is something special (in fact, it also may be the last big Dinosaur from Hasbro as Mattel is taking ownership in late 2017). If those issues did not exist, I would note the room for improvement in the gold paint blending, and perhaps continuation of the red stripes to the tail.

Location Scouting for Jurassic World sequel set to start in Hawaii this November!

As we previously revealed, the untitled Jurassic World sequel (working title: Ancient Futures) is set to return to Hawaii with filming set to start on February 27th, 2017.

It was unclear which islands specifically the film crew will utilise (with both Oahu and Kauai being used in the past) but we have now learned that the production crew will head to the islands in November of this year, to scout locations for the sequel.

Both Jurassic Park and Jurassic World filmed at the Kualoa Ranch on Oahu, so it’s possible the iconic location will see a return, as well as many others.

Kualoa-Ranch

Considering all four movies have been filmed on the islands they may already have specific locations in mind, with this “scout” being more of a chance to director J.A. Bayona and his team to plan out scenes. However, it could also allow for them to decide where crucial sets will be built – providing any will be.

The Jurassic World sequel will film in Hawaii, London and rumours of Beacons Beach in Wales have also been heard. The story is currently unknown.

Thanks to Reel News Hawaii and Nublar7 for first reporting this news!

Now that we know the sequel will return to the islands, what are you hoping to see? Nublar, Sorna, or something new entirely? Be sure to let us know in the comments section below!

Jurassic World sequel to film in Brecon Beacons, Wales?

Following the confirmation that Hawaii will indeed house upcoming Jurassic Park sequel, more location news has arisen. Last week we reported that Wales was also being eyed for Jurassic World 2, though our speculation was that it was likely for their Pinewood Studios facilities only. However, a new report suggests the beautiful countryside will also be featured.

Brecon-Beacons-Hero

According to ‘The Sun’

‘The lush green countryside around the Brecon Beacons was perfect for the movie [and] Penbryn in North Wales is also expected to be used to film some scenes’.

Further, their source is quoted saying:

“The lush green setting and countryside fitted the bill. Producers have been assessing potentially suitable areas all over the UK but chose the Valleys as a prominent area to film.”

Now, it’s worth noting the source is a UK based tabloid with a less than credible reputation. However, ‘The Sun’ was the first to report (in March of this year) that Jurassic World 2 would film in London. These reports were later confirmed by ‘The Knowledge’, and mostly recently the discovery of the ‘Ancient Futures’ production company (also, Frank Marshall confirming it as HQ).

While I wouldn’t use ‘The Sun’ for news of plot scoops, or celebrity happenings, I’m moderately optimistic there is some validity to this information. My confidence is driven by the fact that Wales is certainly going to house the production at some point, and the specifications of this report lack a sensationalist article agenda. That said, take these specifics with an appropriately sized grain of salt.

We can’t be sure that these locations will ultimately be used for Jurassic World 2, but I’m certainly enthralled by their genuine beauty and fresh potential. The concept of seeing new dinosaurs roaming new landscapes is always an easy way to capture my imagination, so I’m hoping this latest news does come to fruition. Plus, the story potential has my curiosity – just how and why are dinosaurs roaming outside of the islands we know and love?

As always, sound off in the comments below, and stay tuned for the latest news!

Frank Marshall talks Jurassic World 2; confirms Hawaii!

Whilst talking all things Jason Bourne with Steve Weintraub over at Collider, Frank Marshall dropped a little more info about Jurassic World 2, confirming that they’ll will indeed be returning to Hawaii and that pre-production is well underway in London. While most of this was shared in a prior article, the Hawaii confirmation is new!

Frank Marshall and Matt Damon

COLLIDER: I want to jump onto something else, I recently spoke to Bryce [Dallas Howard] for Pete’s Dragonand she mentioned to me that you guys are gonna start filming the nextJurassic World early next year, and I saw a little promo poster when I was at CinemaCon. So I have to ask you, with Jurassic World, what was your wishful number at the worldwide box office and how much did you just demolish it, were you prepared for this kind of crazy success?

MARSHALL: No, I wasn’t, and that’s the honest truth. I was hoping to open at 100, they were projecting 100 which is huge, and that would’ve be the biggest opening for a movie that I’ve produced, but we pretty much doubled my expectations [Laughs] at every turn.

COLLIDER: I’m very excited about your director for the sequel, what can you tease people about where you’re at in the development process?

MARSHALL: We’re in pre-production, in fact I just got back from London from meeting with Juan Antonio [Bayona] and the production designer. We’re designing, he’s doing storyboards, and we’re in full pre-production to start shooting sometime early next spring.

COLLIDER: If I’m not mistaken, Colin [Trevorrow] and his writing partner, Derek [Connolly], developed a story for the sequel, are you guys still sticking with that story, or has Bayona taken more of an ownership of the story?

MARSHALL: No, as a director Bayona has his input but Colin and Derek are writing the script, so there have been numerous meetings and we have the template for the movie, but of course he’s putting in his own ideas and taking ownership of it, but it’s pretty much the same story that they originally came up with.

COLLIDER: Do you look at the challenge of coming up with new action set pieces with dinosaurs as something exciting, is it nerve-racking, can you talk about the pressure on one-upping what you’ve done before?

MARSHALL: I think we have that pressure both on Bourne movies and on Jurassic movies [Laughs], we set the bar pretty high. For me it’s always about story, as long as the action sequences move the story forward, that’s what’s important, and I think just having to look and see how we can involve the characters in the story with whatever dinosaur we have in the action sequence. So, it’s a challenge but a healthy challenge.

COLLIDER: I believe you guys shot in Hawaii last time, are you shooting again in Hawaii or are you going to new locales?

MARSHALL: Yes, we’ll be shooting again in Hawaii just like the last one.

It’s very exciting that we have further confirmation that Jurassic World 2 will be returning to the beautiful locales of Hawaii. Rejoice, Reel News Hawaii! Curiously, the wording almost alludes to it being the primary setting, but perhaps Frank was keeping the answer simple to avoid letting more slip. I’m certainly up to seeing more of the islands, but also very hopeful the latest sequel will introduce brand new locations and environments as well.

Jurassic World sequel enlists ‘Gravity’ Production Designer Andy Nicholson!

AndyNMeet Andy Nicholson, the Production Designer for the upcoming Jurassic World sequel. Andy was the Art Director on films such as Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Bourne Ultimatum, The Golden Compass, and Captain America: The First Avenger.

His role as a Production Designer has included films such as Gravity, Divergent, and Assassin’s Creed. Andy was nominated for an Academy Award for his work on Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity.

Production Designers are a key creative leader of the art team, working with the films Director and Producers to craft the look of the film. According to his website, Andy is ‘actively seeking to assimilate digital technology with traditional work-flows and techniques’. His bio goes on to say he is ‘Always on the lookout for staff with new skills’ and ‘[he is] an advocate of immersive design and closely follows the opportunities and developments within the industry’.

gravity_header

Andy Nicholson may be a newcomer to the Jurassic team, but certainly not to the industry. Production Design on previous Jurassic films was handled by Rick Carter (Jurassic Park, The Lost World) and Ed Verreaux (Jurassic Park 3, Jurassic World). This will be the first time Andy and Juan Antonio Bayona have worked together; Bayona has previously worked with Eugenio Caballero (The Impossible, A Monster Calls) and Josep Rosell (The Orphanage).

Personally, I love the movie ‘Gravity’ – it blends practical and CG effects in stunning ways, and I cannot wait to see what Andy brings to the table with Jurassic. Be sure to check out Nicholson’s website for more samples of his work from his portfolio spanning numerous films.

Jurassic World Sequel eyes Wales

Jurassic June? More like Jurassic July. At least that’s what it feels like with the sudden influx of fun news, and cool scoops! We’ve recently learned that fifth Jurassic Park film will operate out of London under the name ‘Ancient Futures’, and will also shoot in Hawaii. This morning we can add a third locale to the list: Wales.

Jw2WalesPinewood

Wales, part of Great Britain, is known for it’s stunningly beautiful yet rugged terrain. It’s no wonder why any movie would want to film there, especially one featuring majestic and terrifying dinosaurs. However, the picturesque landscape may not be part of the equation at all. Wales is also home to its own Pinewood Studios lot.

Pinewood Studio Wales includes:

  • 70,000 sq ft of shooting space, including 2 stages at 20,000 sq ft each and an additional 30,000 sq ft of shooting floor
  • 70,000 sq ft of mixed use production space, including production accommodation and modern, flexible offices and amenities
  • Close proximity to Cardiff and a variety of stunning locations

We discovered Wales as one of the locations by doing some research into ‘Ancient Futures’, the Limited Company the sequel is operating from, and saw that it is registered to operate there alongside England. While I personally think this only means they’re utilizing the Pinewood Studio, I would love if they shot in the gorgeous countryside as well. As previously discussed in our Hawaii article, there is a lot of evidence suggesting the film will feature an all new fictional setting, and as such should call for shooting in a fresh locale not yet in previous films.

Jurassic World 2 releases June 22, 2018 and begins production early next year. So far only Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are confirmed as returning, but stay tuned as cast announcements are surely around the corner.

IDW to publish Jurassic World comics in 2017!

Universal Pictures may not have a panel at San Diego Comic Con 2016, but their licensing partners do and we just got a megaton: IDW Comics will produce and publish Jurassic World comics for 2017! Information is scarce, but Bleeding Cool has the details from the panel:

IDW Jurassic Park cover art, circa 2009
IDW Jurassic Park cover art, circa 2009

“[IDW] to return to Jurassic Park with Jurassic World comics (…) based on the recent remake movie, and scheduled for 2017.

It’s too early to state creative teams. But not too early to state that there will be no feathers.”

Finally! It’s long overdue, but I’m thrilled to learn comics are inbound. The concept of the Jurassic franchise adopting an expanded canon is incredibly exciting, and I cannot wait to see how the story evolves. Here’s hoping hoping for some complex and nuanced stories coupled with kick-ass artwork.

That said, it always bugs me when the Jurassic Park franchise brags about abandoning feathers. Not all Dinosaurs were feathered, but plenty were, and that’s not a bad thing. With the right art direction feathers on some new species to the franchise could look killer. Plus, adhering to modern science (with creative liberties) and depicting the dinosaurs as animals rather than monsters is a Jurassic Park staple.

Be sure to check back for updates on this, in case more information arises from the panel. Are you excited for some new Jurassic fiction to digest? Let us know in the comments below!

There’s an INSANE new Jurassic World 2 story rumor – but we don’t believe it

Everyone. Remain. Calm. Despite conflicting reports, we’re fairly certain there are no assets out of containment. I know what you’re thinking: “When Claire Dearing said that a bunch of people got eaten!” Well, fair enough. But this time will be different… at least so we hope.

Remain Calm

Dish Nation is reporting that they have an exclusive story scoop for the Jurassic World sequel.. and it gets a little bit weird. According to them, the creative team is gunning for a ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ type of story where the dinosaurs eventually reclaim the Earth. Oh, and they will apparently talk and wield machine guns?

Here’s what their LA based source had to say:

“The team at Universal feel that this rebooted Jurassic Park concept can really take things to a new level. The development team feel that a great way for the dinosaurs to be an even greater threat to the humans is for their intelligence to increase. At this stage, their plan to work on a plot where the raptors can converse with Chris’ character Owen. But while their intelligence levels are high, they are still stuck in the mindset of a little children.”

“Coupled with that the military have also developed ideas for the killers to have weapons automatically fitted to their arms. But like all things the ploy will go wrong and once again Owen will have to save the world.”

“These plans are being developed for the sequels as they work on wowing fans following the first film’s success. Their track record is amazing given what they did with Fast And Furious.”

A L A N

Ok. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say this news is false. Beyond it being absurd, and the type of stuff that will kill the franchise, I have some solid reasons why:

First of all, the source being LA based doesn’t add up. This movies plot is under lock and key, and only a few VIP players are privy to the information surrounding it – and their HQ is situated in London. I’m having a tough time believing that a LA based source managed to uncover such detailed plans – and supposedly knowing how it will play into future films as well? That just reeks of assumption.

Further, while next to nothing is known about the plot, Colin Trevorrow has suggested it may be moving away from the militarization of Dinosaurs. Speaking to Wired, he had this to say:

“I feel like the idea that this isn’t always going to be limited to theme parks, and there are applications for this science that reach far beyond entertainment. And when you look back at nuclear power and how that started, the first instinct was to weaponise it and later on we found it could be used for energy.”

The latter part of that quote suggests a different direction for the story, considering the weaponization aspect was already explored in Jurassic World.

Assuming there is some validity to the source and the report, I do have a theory on what caused it. The 2017 merchandise theme for Jurassic World is ‘Raptor Squad’ – much like ‘Dino Hybrid’ for 2016, this is a shared branding theme for license partners.

A small glimpse at 'Raptor Squad' merchandise from Licensing Expo 2016
A small glimpse at ‘Raptor Squad’ merchandise from Licensing Expo 2016

Essentially, the idea is that toys, clothes, and other merchandise can share a unified creative theme even when there are no new films for basis. The concept – which shares a lot in common with the rumor above – was developed in house at Universal by their brand division, who were not privileged to Jurassic World 2 story beats during its creation. Coincidentally, this team operates out of LA – the alleged origin of the rumor above.

On that note: the albino Velociraptor with the DBZ style ‘Scouter Visor’ is kinda awesome. I don’t really want to see that in the movies, but it would make a fun toy! Just don’t permanently weld it to the toy, dinosaurs without gear are the best kind of dinosaur. But I digress, let’s wrap this up.

Long story short: put down the torches and pitchforks, and call off the ACU. I think we’re safe.. for now.
